Tetris Wouldn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — An Additional Classification May Address This Issue

Whenever a significant awards ceremony draws close, one notices a clamor for introducing additional classifications to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and satisfy the spirits of fans dedicated to specific genres.

Another commentator made the case supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, this being a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front since similar to single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification supporting my request stands as crucial and important of all. This is the request: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.

Categorizing Game Types

Classifying creative works isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and inevitably generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that movie academies avoid this approach. However, it represents an essential concession in the world of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse they hardly constitute as a single art form.

To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these classifications effectively encompass many game types, making space possible for most games within them.

Not so for logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Think about these outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. Which classification works between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.

Acknowledgment Issues

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games released every year that have no home at major award shows, if they accidentally match classification types such as Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested Indie races.

  • One classic puzzle game received no recognition in any category during that awards season
  • Another imaginative release was excluded in 2019
  • A beloved organization game was overlooked recently
  • Only a few logic titles managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories

Value of Brain-Teasers

Commonly they're compact experiences, yet the craft behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as most engaged experiences worldwide and have been for many years.

The famous puzzle experience competes with popular creative games claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it also contends for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. You could fill five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

To emphasize again, these are games lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers operate at the hard edge of video game design, creating some of most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Comparable to film action specialists, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay generations.
