Fed Lowers Interest Rates for Second Time This Year During Financial Instability

The United States central bank lowered interest rates on midweek, marking the second rate cut in the current year amid economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.

Move Comes at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve

The move to reduce the key rate by a 0.25% to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Changes

In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the release notes. “Price increases has moved up and stays moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve usually studies BLS data to assess labor market conditions, such as the count of new jobs created to the economy and the present unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and provided a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the employment scene in August.

The figure of positions created to the economy in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.

Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Slowdown

Though the bureau was scheduled to release September’s job market report in early October, it suspended its release when the shutdown started. Employment data company ADP indicated earlier this month that the private sector cut thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a indication that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said recently, a trend he had previously attributed comes from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Shows Gradual Increase

Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still issued its price statistics for last month that indicated that costs are going up, albeit slowly. Prices rose 3% over the past twelve months, the peak since the start of the year. In April, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target inflation rate is 2%.
