Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for hours when multiple of them drifted across the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments sent during the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's main urban center and near the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that these practices become not financially viable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
